The Time I Asked My Neighbor for Cow Manure

During lockdown, I didn’t know how to get fertilizer for my plants. I needed more healthy dirt (did I just say that?!) in order to actually add to my plant collection. Even though we were in lockdown, I yelled across the balcony to my neighbor to ask her where I could get some potting soil. She is a master gardener and grew up on a farm so I figured she knew what she was talking about. She told me to just go to the lady who lives at the top of our hill and ask her for some manure. “Umm… really?” I thought. “I’m supposed to just go up and tell her I need some poop.”

Despite my nerves, I flagged her down as she was soaking up some sun on her balcony. The auntie was so incredibly kind. She asked me if it was for flowers and I told her it was. I am so glad I could understand what she was asking and actually communicate with her in the language.

There was a whole area of her garden that she had pre-mixed with manure and dirt. It was teaming with earth worms and centipedes. She just scooped it up with her hands and filled my yellow cleaning bucket to the brim. She told me I could come back any time to get more. Thank you, Auntie!

Here’s auntie after she chopped down a bunch of branches for her animals to eat. She is such a strong woman!
