Homemade Bagels That Make You Smile

Hello Bagel plate that makes me smile!

And how are you? (I’m not talking to the bagel plate anymore) How are you doing amidst the pandemic? I hope you’ve watched and heard Some Good News. Maybe you’ve had a long conversation with a dear friend or called a family member. Maybe you have made something delicious or are reading a book that takes you into a different world or era.

This SGN channel is currently making us smile.

We have pretty much been practicing the stay-at-home thing for 40 days now. I realized I need to ration our white flour since it’s not really a thing here and it’s hard to find when the country is in a normal state. But, Sabbath breakfast is definitely a worthy occasion to use white flour.

Saturdays are our Sabbath — a time to rest our minds from the chaos, fill our hearts with truth, engage in activities that rejuvenate instead of drain us, and have fun.

I decided to make bagels after being inspired by a wonderful friend who made them and who even started selling them to friends in order to provide a little pick-me-up breakfast or afternoon snack while people are at home. She sent the video below that was super helpful about how to make bagels.

I used this bread machine bagel dough recipe which took me all of 5 minutes to put into my bread machine.

I didn’t have all the ingredients for Everything Bagel Seasoning so I just threw together what I DID have and it still tasted great.

  • grilling seasoning (that had garlic, onion, and salt in it)
  • white sesame seeds
  • poppy seeds
  • pinch of garlic powder

It actually wasn’t as complicated and long of a process as I thought it would be.

The hardest part was rolling them into actual bagels and making the hole in the middle big enough– which I didn’t do. Maybe next time, folks.

After they rise, you put them in boiling water for 1 min on each side.(what…who knew?)

Then on go the toppings. Of course we wanted to remember our dreams of biting into a Panera Cinnamon Crunch Bagel so we tried our hand at it. And yes— it was amazing!

Then bake and enjoy the freshest and softest bagels you’ve ever had.

Since we don’t have cream cheese or avocados, we fried eggs and made an everything bagel sandwich. It was delicious!

I’d love to know what has been making you smile lately. 🙂
