Sabbath Breakfast Traditions

Traditions. I’m realizing they don’t have to be stressful events or grand ideas. Traditions are simply celebrations or routines that you prioritize and create on a regular basis– whether weekly, monthly, or yearly.

Over time, traditions create memories for you and others that will last a lifetime.

One of the traditions we have decided to create is Saturday Morning Sabbath Breakfast. Saturdays are our rest days or sabbath days.

Sabbath should be a day we look forward to with great joy.

My aim for our sabbath is to be intentional (with true rest, with our time, with others) and enjoy eating delicious food.

Some Sabbath Saturdays are just the hubs and me and some days, like today, we have eight people crowded around the table enjoying mango crepes and coconut whipped cream each talking about how they are going to rest.

Every Saturday that we’re home I try to choose something to make. Sometimes it’s the same thing as the week before or sometimes it’s a new delicacy. My goal is to prepare things ahead of time so it’s as easy and fun as possible once Saturday morning comes around. It might be a family recipe or something I found online.

The only qualifications are…

 1. it’s something we wouldn’t normally eat throughout the week

2.  it’s something we can actually make on this side of the world

Here are a few of our favorites…

Mango Crepes with Coconut Whipped Cream & Cranberry Drizzle

RECIPE:

Coconut Whipped Cream

Mango Filling

Crepes…

1 C flour                        1/2 t salt                           3 egg

 1 T canola oil or melted butter                         1   1/2  C milk

Mix well in blender. pour 1/4 c into skillet. tilt pan to spread batter around. flip when crepe is bubbling on top

Cranberry Drizzle…

1/2 C dried cranberries + 1 T water (to begin with).  Mix in a blender until desired consistency. Add sugar to taste.

Orange Cranberry Scones with Citrus Glaze

When I was making this recipe here in South Asia, the only oranges I could find where green–ripe, but green. Hence, this photo includes the green grated orange peel from the glaze (not ideal) but it still tasted delicious.

RECIPE:

Cranberry Orange Wheat Scones with Citrus Glaze

(It calls for anise seeds. I haven’t made the scones with anise seeds yet because my family has used this recipe for many years and we don’t include them but I’m sure it is tasty either way.)

Cinnamon Rolls with the Pioneer Woman’s Maple Coffee Frosting

RECIPE:

Cinnamon Rolls or Here without a bread machine

Frosting (The Pioneer Woman)

  • 1 two lb. bag powdered sugar
  • 2 tsp. maple flavoring
  • 1/2 c. whole milk
  • 1/4 c. unsalted butter (melted)
  • 1/8 tsp. salt

Blueberry Pancakes with Blueberry Spread

RECIPE:

Blueberry Pancakes

Since we don’t get fresh blueberries here, I used dried blueberries and rehydrate them in water.

How to Rehydrate Berries

1/2 C water for every 1 cup dried berries. Soak overnight.

Blueberry Spread

roughly 1/2 T cold water for every 1 T cornstarch (mix in a small bowl)

I used the leftover blueberries to make blueberry spread.

Heat blueberries and 1/2 C water on the stove in small pot. Once boiling, add cornstarch mixture and stir. You can keep adding small amounts of water if too thick and more cornstarch mixture if too thin.

What are some of your favorite special breakfast recipes?

Nice thoughts and so true. Felt connected to you. We missed you at the wedding and now we are visiting Matt (Josh, Michelle, and me). It’s beautiful out here.
Wish I could whip up some scones! I liked how you said it’s been in our family a long time.
We went to Victoria to visit cousin dan and his wife Leah. But we didn’t get to have an English tea.

    Heading home tomorrow.
    Love
    Stu and Michelle

Hey Uncle Stu, Thank you for your encouragement and kind thoughts about the Sabbath Breakfast Post. I thought of you all when I was writing it cause I remember so many special scone breakfasts at your house through the years. Love that family tradition. Wish I could have made it to the wedding too but loved at least seeing it on the screen. Have fun visiting Matt! Love you
